An unexpected (and lucky) discovery

Today I was working on a project for a young couple who bought an apartment in Baldwin Hills. They want to furnish it in a modern style, “but not too much of anything.” Choosing colors and furniture was quiet easy, but I was really stuck with wall décor. I needed something bright and catchy but at the same time very simple and appealing. After thorough googling, I found what I was looking for.

Meet Mr. Afremov!

You might have seen his pictures on the web, because they are all over it. And it’s no wonder, he is one of the best contemporary Jewish artists of nowadays. What makes his works so special is not their bright colors, not even his impeccable style. They are so cheerful and lovely that you just can’t take off your eyes! When you look at paintings by Leonid Afremov, you feel a powerful surge of positive energy and that’s why people like them so much. My clients chose this picture to decorate their living room: http://afremov.com/LOVE-BY-THE-PALETTE-KNIFE-Oil-Painting-On-Canvas-By-Leonid-Afremov-Size-30-x40.html They said it reminds them of their first date 🙂 And I certainly supported their choice!

And that’s why:

If you pay a bit more attention to this painting, you’ll notice a couple of interesting things:

  • There is a contrast of warm (orange) and cold (blue) shades that meet exactly in the middle. You probably didn’t know that, but orange and blue are complementary colors. They form one of the most eye-pleasing color duets. I’m telling you that as a certified designer 🙂
  • Take a close look at the canvas. There are no smooth lines or elaborate detail. The paint is laid in quick abrupt moves, very densely and very casually. A touch of crimson here, a pinch of green there… The whole painting is essentially a patchwork of multicolored strokes.
  • And finally, texture. Mr. Afremov paints with a palette knife (a popular trend among contemporary artists) which allows him to build up visible layers of paint. You can’t really see it in the photo, but this particular picture actually has some sort of a “landscape.” My clients kept running their fingers all over it until I started worrying it won’t make it to the wall 🙂

Most importantly, they bought the painting at a considerable discount, just for about $130. I guess it’s still up at that price, check it out if you are interested. There are also other discounted paintings on top of the home page, perhaps you’ll like them more.

Leonid Afremov is undoubtedly one of the classiest artists I know. He has that incredible gift of reaching out to people. Today you can run across an immense number of contemporary artists, painters and sculptors struggling to make a name. But only few of them are worth it. And I can definitely say Mr. Afremov is!

Like I said, I just love travelling. I can’t imagine spending my whole life at one place. Visiting different cities and countries, learning exotic cultures, trying new things… It makes me feel alive! Most of all I like roaming old streets where you can still see buildings from past centuries and feel the true spirit of the city. It’s where you can suddenly stumble upon a souvenir shop run by a crazy old man with piles of quirky stuff to buy or wander into a shabby pub where a tipsy band plays country for a bunch of dancing drunks. You won’t see any of this in the center of Los Angeles. That’s what I like so much about traveling. I’m a collector of impressions 🙂 So far I’ve been to Canada, Mexico, Israeli, China and India. My next mark is London. I’m already making a list of places to visit. After reading this article http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/10/02/travel/london-bloomsbury-restaurants-shopping.html I decided I should definitely drop by at Darkroom, that hip abstract concept store in Bloomsbury. In my line of work, I have to deal with contemporary art quite a lot and I believe I have a rather good taste in it. So whenever I visit a new place, I head straight for the nearest museum or exhibition. They say London is crawling with those, so I’m really looking forward to my next trip!

Hi everyone!

I’m Linda Wilson, a 25 year old girl from LA. I just moved here and I’m absolutely in love with this city. Some might find it too crowded, but you just have to spend a little more time here to learn its romantic side! Believe me, I know what I’m talking about, I’ve been to many cities. Travelling is my passion. I’ve already visited five countries and I’m now saving up on a trip to London. I’m an interior designer and I recently got a job at a local studio. It gets tough at times, but I’m not complaining. I really like what I’m doing. Too bad I had no time to make any friends yet. Maybe this blog will help me? 🙂
